Today I’m addressing a second quote from Euan Semple’s book, Organizations Don’t Tweet, People Do: “The more you give, the more you get.” I’ll address this solely in the context of online social media, and this discussion naturally dovetails with an earlier one about knowledge having value only when shared.
Euan makes two important points supporting his position. First, he argues it’s important to be seen as adding value. The difference between this and knowledge having value when shared is a matter of perspective. Shared knowledge benefits the organization or the community. Being seen to add value to the organization or community benefits the sharer of that knowledge. It’s a subtle distinction, but an important one.
The second point is the concept of reciprocity–getting something back for giving something. It’s quite a profound point, actually, because when someone shares knowledge, opinions, or views in his or her blog and on Twitter, there are no expectations, no contracts, no commitments for anyone to give back as they receive. And yet people do.
Wisdom is said to come from collections of filtered data, information, knowledge, and experience. Our leaders have wisdom they’re willing to share, day in, day out. It’s ours for the asking, but remember the principle: the more you give, the more you get. In other words, engage. (hat tip @JaneBozarth)
